my wish list

via pinterest

This chair is high on my dream wish list.  The Womb Chair, designed by Eero Saarinen in 1946. I have always loved the look of the chair, but I was blown away to find that it really is amazingly comfortable.

The only reason its still on my wish list is that I have my heart set on the cream boucle one and um… well its not really something I can throw in the wash when little vegemite finger marks appear.

It’s my one day chair in the corner of my bedroom , so until then I will just keep sighing when I see it.

disconnected

Today I screamed at someone on the phone, not the raise your voice but full scary pyscho screaming and banging my hand on my desk simultaneously…… why?

Telstra.

I have clocked up more than 25 hours of my time on the phone trying desperately to get someone to fix their mistakes….like disconnecting my new phone line that took 8 weeks to connect, getting us to dig a trench and then not coming till 4 weeks later (trench successfully filled back in with all the rain).

But they saved the best for last, a week without any internet connection and my emails not coming through on my iphone either.

Total disconnection….what a nightmare if your not the one choosing too.  So if you have sent an email, are waiting for a response or follow up from me, Im now back. It may take a little time to wade through the backlog.

Sounds like I am making this up { oh I wish I was} but emails also disappeared {like the dog ate my homework} one minute they were there the next …..gone

The screaming worked, I am now on the internet but the other office phones….. well I will maintain the Telstra rage and hopefully all will be sorted soon.

I promise a lovely post in a few days, just wanted to get that of my chest.

Greige

via pinterest

Greige- the devine hybrid colour, not quite grey, not quite beige.

It is a fabulous colour that you can layer and it never looks matchy matchy.  Its rustic, earthy, soft and well very French looking.

via bathinteriordesign

As a colour designer, to describe the elements of Greige its sounds like am talking about a friend – deep sense of comfort, has an ease with others, unpretentious, brings balance, a quiet confidence and a great level of sophistication.

Skona Hem

It works its magic not only into undyed fabrics but also with materials like rattan and wood.

Its a soft industrial look

Its a beautiful but never boring neutral bedroom

House of the week – Jackie O’s Country Retreat

This is is my dream country house, the stunning home of radio host Jackie O located in Kangaroo Valley in the Southern Highlands of NSW.

Jackie and her husband Lee built the home on their property and I am in love with it all, the location, the contemporary homestead design, paint colours through to the timber panelling inside.

The pool with the infinity edge looks amazing with the beautiful bush backdrop.

What I truely love about the design of this home is that they have made a seemless blend of contemporary with modern Australian country style.

I wish I had an image of the kitchen, I can see they have built a traditional style fireplace  surround for the stove. So even though it a brand new home, it looks as if it has been here for 100 years.  LOVE IT.

Here is pic of the lovely deep farmhouse style kitchen sink.

The bedrooms are configured to suit guests with super comfortable beds and simple yet stylish designs.

When using a lot of white or neutral colours throughout a house the key to getting a balanced “warm” look (not too clinical) is to have texture.

The wood panelling on the walls is the perfect way to achieve this.

Watching the sun set and hearing the crackling of the fire and sharing this home with family and friends….Jackie & Lee have created a fabulous home.

Hope you enjoyed visiting this home. It truely is one of my all time favourites.

Happy Birthday

Happy 1st Birthday Stylish Livable Spaces

I have been missing my blog, I even missed it’s birthday……

I have been busy helping lots of lovely new clients with their homes.  Its been a huge few weeks especially for exterior consults (my fav).

Its also now Autumn which is my all time favourite season (goodbye wet long soggy summer).  The colours of Autumn are amazing and I get a good dose of my favourite orange & yellow hues.

So please forgive my absence and lack of posts.  I will continue to work on the exterior series and I did promise one lovely reader that I would post all about garage doors…its coming.

I do also remember promising an updated portfolio of my work as well as a home tour.  I am best just to say it will be done this year { hopefully sooner rather than later}.  I am not being a slacker, I am spending a little more time with my beautiful boys.

One didn’t want to hold my hand the other day at school {he thinks he is too old}.  I was heartbroken and realised that this time with them is so precious.

my beautiful boys, twins aged 6 and baby now 20 mths

Thank you to all my readers, I am so very grateful for your time and hope you continue to enjoy this blog.

Choosing a white roof for your home

Modern Home Magazine

I absolutely adore white roofs at the moment.  Not that many around, but they are fabulous. So fresh and crisp and lend themselves to endless exterior colour schemes.  If I was building or renovating again, Surfmist by colourbond would win hands down!!

Although recently I have had a few clients who have had their surfmist dreams shattered by ridiculous councils who have knocked back this colour as it “does not blend” into the escarpment.

The delightful blogger and designer A-M designed her home “The House” with all white roof, gutters and fascia’s and detailed her journey of building this beauty here. I think this all white combination is stunning! You can always change the house colour as anything goes with white!

Here are a few more white top lovelies to get you inspired…..

Online home magazines

I have an unhealthy obsession with home design magazines. I find it hard to let them go and recently forced myself to cull anything prior to 2006 from my collection. I have a much healthier relationship with online magazines and have become an avid reader.

They are fabulous, free and the format allows you to click straight through to suppliers websites from the magazine. Best of all no clutter, no storage and if I love a particular image, I take a snapshot and file it on my computer.

I still love my glossies in hardcopy but here are my online favourites.  Go and check them out, you will love them too! {click on the image to go direct to the mag}

Happy weekend reading!

Choosing roof colours

colorbond

Choosing  colours to acheive the right balance for your roofing can be a challenge, especially if you have a builder who sticks the colour chart in front of you and says we need an answer now !!

Here is a quick guide to making those all important colour choices. {remember they are VERY important as its not likely you will want to paint over your new roof}

colorbond

Here are my suggestions for getting a great cohesive scheme.

1. Roof and gutters should be the same colour {as they are in the image above although they look darker they are the same}. Gutters are not an architectural detail to highlight.  The only other options with gutters is to have the the same colour as the fascia.

2. The fascia is an important element to consider as it acts like a frame around the roof, separating it from your home.  There are no exact rules but I do prefer a white fascia.  I think it gives a nice clean break and creates continuity if the window trims are white too. The other option with the fascia is to have it the same colour as the roof and gutters.

3.Down pipes are my greatest frustration when it comes to exteriors as people still insist on painting them in a highlight colour.  PLEASE DON’T DO IT! read more about it here. My advice is order it in colorbond colour that is the closest match to your house colour and then have them painted your house colour.  I even have my painters paint the first two bends that hug the eaves, painted in the eaves colour so they are camouflaged as well. If you have brick there is always an option with colorbond like Jasper or Woodland Grey.

So what are my favourite colorbond colours…… Surfmist, Dune, Woodland Grey and I absolutely love Loft, which is a fairly newish colour (only out for a few years).  It’s a devine mix of chocolate and aubergine.  Perfect for federation homes and even very contemporary ones too!

My next post in the Exterior Colour Guide is about choosing a light or dark scheme.  To read the other posts in this series click here.

Painting your front door

via homedit

I had planned to write a few more posts about exterior colours before I covered painting your front door, however I have just done an interview for Melbourne Weekly all about sprucing up your exterior and I kept coming back to painting front doors.

The trend for 2012 is bright colours for a front door.  Yellows, pinks, oranges, bright blues and apple greens.

The front cover of this months Country Style is fabulous and spot on with the bright door trend.  It works so well if you have a dark charcoal exterior or on the other end a light main colour so the front door really pops.

If you have a brick home, it can be a challenge to add a bright colour. I tend to steer brick red brick home owners towards a beautiful black gloss door.

via homedit

The rule is tend to use for brick is to use a white on the door framework and trim to give the colour of the door some breathing space from the brick.  Actually I do prefer a white trim for most doors that you want to make a feature.

Now just because bright colours are on trend, does not mean you can't update your door to a lovely pastel soft shade or even white, grey or black.

abeachcottage.com

I am repainting our front door soon from a fab orange colour I custom made similar to this colour chip {below} to a new neutral by Dulux called Unforgettable.  The new colour is an almost white outside.

Why am I painting over the orange door? Well its because I am breaking one of my own rules for exteriors by having more than three main colours.  Over time we have made changes and now we have 1. house colour 2. trim colour 3. garage door colour 4. front door colour  5. feature stone work.

It is all a bit busy for my taste, so the garage door and front door and being painted the same colour {Unforgettable} and letting the stone work have top billing.

via Real Simple

Before you go running of to the paint store, go outside and stand at the kerb and have a good look at your house.  Is it in need of a little colour, or is to busy with more than 3 or 4 colours. I will write a post on how to add colour to your frontage if your not painting your  door.

I will continue to source some inspirational front door images for you and collect them in a gallery for the Exterior Colour Guide.  Stay tuned

A dogs {stylish} life

I have a bit of a dog design dilemma.  I would love a rattan dog bed just like this one from Riviera Maison {sans the $600+ price tag} but I cant find one large enough.

We have a beautiful {and somewhat nutty}  8 year old Chocolate Labrador called Friday.  He is a much loved member of our family and is allowed inside but only in the family room and my office.

I try to make all the elements of my home live up to the name of this blog, to create a stylish livable space. Fridays large inside dog pillow has ended up in his kennel and its definitely not making return to the house.

Do any of you know where I can source a dogs bed similar to this? I did find one at Early Settler but even their large was a bit small for Friday.
