Choosing roof colours

Choosing  colours to acheive the right balance for your roofing can be a challenge, especially if you have a builder who sticks the colour chart in front of you and says we need an answer now !!

Here is a quick guide to making those all important colour choices. {remember they are VERY important as its not likely you will want to paint over your new roof}

Here are my suggestions for getting a great cohesive scheme.

1. Roof and gutters should be the same colour {as they are in the image above although they look darker they are the same}. Gutters are not an architectural detail to highlight.  The only other options with gutters is to have the the same colour as the fascia.

2. The fascia is an important element to consider as it acts like a frame around the roof, separating it from your home.  There are no exact rules but I do prefer a white fascia.  I think it gives a nice clean break and creates continuity if the window trims are white too. The other option with the fascia is to have it the same colour as the roof and gutters.

3.Down pipes are my greatest frustration when it comes to exteriors as people still insist on painting them in a highlight colour.  PLEASE DON’T DO IT! read more about it here. My advice is order it in colorbond colour that is the closest match to your house colour and then have them painted your house colour.  I even have my painters paint the first two bends that hug the eaves, painted in the eaves colour so they are camouflaged as well. If you have brick there is always an option with colorbond like Jasper or Woodland Grey.

So what are my favourite colorbond colours…… Surfmist, Dune, Woodland Grey and I absolutely love Loft, which is a fairly newish colour (only out for a few years).  It’s a devine mix of chocolate and aubergine.  Perfect for federation homes and even very contemporary ones too!

My next post in the Exterior Colour Guide is about choosing a light or dark scheme.  To read the other posts in this series click here.

    Hi Angie I love your blog we are currently doing some renos but have started in the back yard with my husband building a shed the fence around it is woodland grey. The shed is being build with a colourbond roof & hardiplank. I am unsure about what colour to paint the shed as the house has not yet been renovated (1960 – 1970′s) not sure what we are going to do with the house yet. we are in a beachside suburb about 750m to the beach. I was thinking surfmist for the roof as i would like that on the main house, but not sure whether to do the same colour as the fence ie blend the shed in or something different like deep ocean or loft ?? it will be 4m x 7m so a decent size. Any ideas would be much appreciated
    kind regards
